Freight rates are determined by a number of factors.
The shipment’s volume plays a role, its dimensions, weight, density and classification and of course other aspects such as distance and type of freight. Missing information or incorrect specifics can increase your cost significantly (25-40%) and it’s a good idea to talk to an experienced freight broker to make the best choice in terms of the shipment process. It will provide you with attractive options, the best freight quotes and help you save money and resources.
Full container loads (FCL) or Full truck loads (FTL) are pretty much a straight-forward calculation in terms of freight dimensions.
- As the term states, you are paying for a full container load. Your carrier charges you depending on the type and size of container. These are mostly 20 and 40 ft containers, and there is a wide range of different container types available to suit your shipment.
LTLs or LCLs (Less than a truck or container load) freight quotes are a bit trickier to calculate.
- As space is the most valuable asset in freight shipping, the correct dimensions of your freight are critical information for your carrier. Measurements must include width, length and height, and should be rounded to the nearest inch. Especially with LTL(Less than a truck load) shipments, carriers rely on accurate freight dimensions to predetermine the number of individual loads for a specific truck. Inaccurate data can result in costly adjustments, so it’s always good to have experienced customs / freight brokers on your side.
FTLs versus LTLs
- If you need to move a large amount of goods or cargo (your shipment weighs 10,000 pounds or more), FTL might be your best option. The main difference between FTL and LTL is that LTL transports the shipments of several customers on one truck, while FTL only carries your goods.
- As FTL truckloads only handle one customer and one destination at a time, it is easier to determine and meet specific delivery and pick up times. LTL is a good solution when you have smaller or lighter goods and when you are interested in saving money, or you have several small shipments you need delivered to various locations. Clearit will assist you in determining your specific freight quote based on your needs
Classification of freight
- With LTL shipping, your load’s classification plays a big role in the final freight cost. The particular class your shipment is in makes up the LTL freight rate. You can find information about your freight class in the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) book by National Motor Tariff Association NMTA. It contains 18 different established classes that are determined by a product’s value, its density, stow-ability, liability and ease of handling. The higher the class, the higher the rate will be. Clearit’s customs brokers assist you in determining your LTL freight class for shipment.
Density is another aspect that plays a role in the classification of your freight.
- It is based on the number of pieces that make up your freight, their weight and dimensions. Lower density shipments usually fall into a higher freight class. The farthest points, including covers and packaging are measured, and density is then calculated by multiplying lbs per cubic foot (width, height and depth) of the shipment.
