A new report from the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has identified several issues relating to infrastructure and trucking industry regulations that, if improved, bolster the efficiency of Canadian inter-provincial supply chains and economic trade.
Some of the identified issues and recommendations of the report include:
- Improving winter road maintenance and ensuring that roads are cleared and maintained in a consistent and timely manner across all provinces and territories, and to the same constantly high standard.
- Increasing the number and frequency of rest areas along major transportation corridors
- Twinning Highway 185 in Quebec to create a connected network of four-lane highways from Halifax to Toronto
- Further harmonizing LCV program requirements in Western Canada, which could include licensing and permitting
- Improving and modernizing the oversize/overweight trucking sector (carriers that move objects like cranes, excavation equipment, wind turbine blades, etc.), such as standardization for minimum clearances and bridge heights to reduce impediments to movement
- Strengthening oversight and accountability for truck safety and accountability
- Facilitating more coordination and communication between different municipalities and jurisdictions regarding weight regulations and road bans to reduce logistical challenges
- Expanding the consistency and reliability of cellular and internet service across all freight corridors
- Increasing access to trade data
Canadian Trucking Alliance Charman Greg Munden stated that “the issues identified in this report align with several of CTA’s core policies in areas of driver safety, health and wellness; highway/technology infrastructure maintenance and expansion – as well as strengthening efforts to combat non-compliance in the industry and level the competitive playing field for responsible trucking companies.”
