{"id":5217,"date":"2022-10-21T09:05:31","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T13:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/?p=5217"},"modified":"2022-10-21T09:13:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T13:13:40","slug":"truck-driver-shortage-biggest-threat-to-economic-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/truck-driver-shortage-biggest-threat-to-economic-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Truck driver shortage one of the biggest threats to economic recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, Stephen Laskowski, is raising alarm bells over the acute shortage of truck drivers in Canada and its negative implications for the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an old saying in our sector you may be familiar with, which goes back decades \u2013 if you got it a truck brought it,\u201d said Laskowski, \u201cBut, the truth is that during the pandemic \u2013 and even still today \u2013 there are people who didn\u2019t \u2018get\u2019 what they need or when they needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the House Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Lawskowski stressed the importance of dealing with the truck driver shortage as a means of easing inflation and solving the supply chain crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truck driver has always been one of the most critical, but unsung, contributors, to our national economy. Without drivers, trucks sit idle,\u201d he said, noting that Canada is short nearly 30,000 commercial truck drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis chain reaction and\u00a0the\u00a0associated consequences will also inevitably flow through to\u00a0the\u00a0companies relying on\u00a0the\u00a0delivery, be it raw materials, manufacturing inputs, or finished products destined for store shelves. With little ability to replace this lost capacity through adding labour, things will only get tighter for the foreseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laskowski presented several solutions that could help ease the current supply chain crisis from a trucking perspective: improving access to immigration and training funding for drivers, and fixing the Driver Inc. scheme, which the CTA alleges is being used by some unscrupulous companies to take advantage of drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Back in spring of 2022, a Nanos Research poll conducted on behalf of the Canadian Trucking Alliance revealed that almost 100% of the trucking executives interviewed felt that driver shortage was the biggest threat to the trucking industry and Canadian economy.
