This FTA can also be referred to as the \u201cNew NAFTA\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Read about it here: <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/cusmausmca-the-new-nafta\/\">CUSMA\/USMCA: Meet The New NAFTA<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/cusma-rules-of-origin\/\">CUSMA: Rules Of Origin &amp; Certifying Origin<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a survey conducted by DHL Express, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goglobal.dhl-usa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DHL-2020-SME-Survey.pdf\">International Trade Impact and Outlook<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>,<\/strong><\/span> of over 2000 small and medium-sized companies, about 50% states that the pandemic made them more wary of global trade. Additionally and unfortunately, almost 80% of respondents have seen a dip in revenues due to COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As businesses move towards stabilization, recovery, and reopening, CUSMA offers a much needed boost for some industries. However, almost a third of respondents stated that they did not know how this agreement would impact their business at all.<\/p>\n<p>At a baseline, CUSMA promises to bring forth some much needed technological advancements to trade processes, and key provisions that are built to keep trade barriers between the 3 parties low. Looking at it this way, there will certainly be new opportunities for businesses to take advantage of here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4807\" src=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2020\/06\/NAFTA_logo.svg_-1024x837.png\" alt=\"cusma nafta\" width=\"550\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/NAFTA_logo.svg_-1024x837.png 1024w, https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/NAFTA_logo.svg_-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/NAFTA_logo.svg_.png 1252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>In a piece published on the Supply Chain Brain, <\/b><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychainbrain.com\/authors\/7480-eugene-laney-scb-contributor\">contributing author and Head of International Trade Affairs at DHL, Eugene Laney<\/a><\/span><\/strong> <b>outlines the key advantages of CUSMA for small and mid-sized businesses in North America.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Technological updates to customs procedures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like: e-signatures, self-certification of origin, etc. This means that customs data can move freely across borders (prohibiting localization of data &#8212; meaning that data cannot be stored in one place.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anti-counterfeiting safeguards: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are now new tools that guard businesses (and nations) against counterfeiting documentation as well as intellectual property. These are frameworks that did not previously exist &#8212; ultimately protecting jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Access to growing markets:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As Eugeune Laney puts it:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the company is supplying smocks, hammers and equipment to a manufacturer, or selling jewelry, paintings or purses on Shopify, there&#8217;s enormous upside potential in marketing to the growing consumer class in Mexico who currently purchases a lot of goods via e-commerce.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Raised de minimis shipment levels:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canada and Mexico have opted to raise this threshold, which reduces the cost of shipping goods internationally and streamlining the customs cleaning process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lower delivery costs:<\/strong> the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) has stated that traders entering new markets can also benefit from lowered delivery costs for their goods.
