As such, we can expect some shifts on the Canadian economy as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve seen a multitude of regulatory and operational issues pop up as a result of COVID-19. In order to better prepare for what\u2019s to come, we wanted to take a look at some of the underlying and overt impacts on the importing, trade, and supply chain industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a piece in Mondaq, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettjones.com\/PearsonDarrel\/\">Darrel Pearson &#8212; Leader of International Trade and Investment at Bennett Jones<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he discusses some of the ramifications on the business world. We will be pulling some information from his analysis to look at the situation from the lense of an importer:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the three months that have followed the initial outbreak in China, a variety of legal, administrative and regulatory issues have emerged as the novel coronavirus has spread and public health efforts have been initiated to &#8220;flatten the curve&#8221;.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Disrupted supply chains: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re seeing a slowing down in the manufacturing process due to the reduction in labor (through social distancing measures or layoffs). Importing may also be throttled in speed as precautionary measures implemented by transportation governance, like ship quarantining, etc. These things will certainly add time onto the supply chain process, so businesses must account for this when placing\/fulfilling orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Commercial borders staying open: <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-safety-canada\/news\/2020\/03\/us-canada-joint-initiative-temporary-restriction-of-travelers-crossing-the-us-canada-border-for-non-essential-purposes.html\">Even though non-essential travel has been limite<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>d<\/strong><\/span>, the Federal government is working to keep the flow of commercial goods moving. However, clearing goods at the border is one thing, but distributing\/selling goods will be another challenge for businesses at this time, as not many people are shopping for non-essential goods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4792\" src=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2020\/05\/charles-deluvio-vQdFU6DVgxM-unsplash-888x1024.jpg\" alt=\"canada import covid-19\" width=\"550\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/charles-deluvio-vQdFU6DVgxM-unsplash-888x1024.jpg 888w, https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/charles-deluvio-vQdFU6DVgxM-unsplash-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Customs compliance &amp; documentation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBSA has seen a disruption in the investigation &amp; appeals process as a result of the pandemic. In consideration of this, these processes have been suspended, meaning there will be no reports, requests, or penalties issued until stated otherwise by the Government of Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>New CBSA policies to help businesses out: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customs has extended the time limit on payments with reduced interest (until June 2020 at least). They\u2019ve also added 30 more days onto the 90-day period in which you can correct any errors found in documentation.
