Importing in Canada is a regulated process. Oh, no one is surprised? Right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The process of bringing commercial goods over can be an overwhelming task; there\u2019s (seemingly) mountains of paperwork to sift through and a wide number of rules and regulations to consider &#8212; depending on the type of imported goods.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we talk a lot about the \u201cregulatory framework\u201d with various levels of abstraction on this blog a lot. We aim to educate our audience on all things customs\/import related, sometimes just skimming certain topics lightly (like specific regulations). But we\u2019re taking a closer look at what import controls are, as well as a few other related terms that pop up as a part of industry lingo.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t seem like the appeal of sourcing more affordable (or low cost) commercial goods from other countries will be wavering any time soon. There are certainly many challenges to doing business this way, but it comes out as a net positive experience if you play your cards right!<\/p>\n<p>Importers need to work with a large group of collaborators\/trade partners like supplies, brokers, freight forwarders, and more to get the job done. And the nature of the trade industry makes it very difficult for businesses to take on the process of staying abreast of applicable changes in import regulations. Keep reading to learn more:<\/p>\n<p><b>What are import controls?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Can also be referred to as import restrictions. The term refers to the methods used by governing bodies to control the value, volume, and type of goods entering the country. There are a few primary import controls\/restrictions to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Tariffs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fees, duties, or taxes to be paid on the imported goods.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Licenses: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licenses or quotas that limit the total quantity of imported goods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prohibition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevention of entry for certain types of items, including dangerous or harmful items.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca\/publications\/dm-md\/d19\/d19-10-2-eng.html\">CBSA<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s legal definition, implementing an import control is: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goods included on the Import Control List, entering Canada for commercial or personal use, including goods entering temporarily or entered into a bonded or sufferance warehouse must be imported under the authority of a permit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2019\/12\/watts-roofing-supplies-tgm7Ay5Q1aw-unsplash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4656\" src=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2019\/12\/watts-roofing-supplies-tgm7Ay5Q1aw-unsplash-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"warehouse imports\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/watts-roofing-supplies-tgm7Ay5Q1aw-unsplash-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/clearit.ca\/canadian-customs-broker-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/watts-roofing-supplies-tgm7Ay5Q1aw-unsplash-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the permits in question, exactly?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Import permits, of course! Business owners of all kinds should already expect to get a permit for their dealings, as permits of all kinds are required in order to do business in Canada, it\u2019s just a matter of finding out which one you need. There are two categories of permits for importers, as stipulated in the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/e-19\/\">Export and Import Permits Act<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are General Import Permits (GIPS), and specific import permits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Import permits are issued in accordance with the Import Permit Regulations. There is an authorized permit balance and permit quantities are deducted from there.
